The catalog is full of great parts and parts information as well as some helpful tips. You will notice that there may be different levels of quality for some of the parts....they are defined in the part number itself.
OEM and NOS parts
If a part number starts with KA-xxx-xxx, then its an OEM (Original Equipment Manufaturer) or an NOS (New Old Stock) part. OEM means that the folks who made the part back when Karmann was building ghias, is still producing the part today. This doesnt mean that the part is still being made exactly the same way as they were originally, as things in manufacturing change over the years, but the part is typically better than the best repro for that part. NOS means the part is new and is an original part, but may have been in storage for many years. NOS parts are the most sought after by most and demand the highest prices for replacement parts.
Repro parts:
If the part is a quality reproduction part, the part number will start with KQ-xxx-xxx. Quality is dtermined by material, fit, durability, etc.
If the part is deemed a Decent repro, then the part number will start with KD-xxx-xxx. This means the parts is OK and will work for the majority of Karmann Ghia owners.
If the part is of poor quality, then the part number will start with a KE-xxx-xxx. I call these parts "Econo" parts. This means that the buyer is only concerened with the price, and quality is not an issue. I try to steer away from selling these parts...sometimes it cant be avoided as the part may be the only part available as a replacement.
Used Parts:
Used parts have a part number that starts off with a KU-xxx-xxx. Used parts vary in condition. I like to talk to the customer about used parts before sending them out. Needs vary from customer to customer...some want "new" looking used parts...which is possible sometimes, but most are in various conditions of "used". Of course the more used they are, the less expensive they are.
Refurbished parts:
Refurbished parts have a part number that starts with KR-xxx-xxx. This would be used for rebuilt clocks, rear view mirrors, recoated bulbholders, rechromed bumpers, and other chromed parts, etc. House of Ghia will be adding this service in the future. There are parts in the catalog already listed as refurbished, but you will need to contact us to see if they are available.
As a side note, you might see part numbers that start with some other letter other than a "K". "K" signifies a Karmann Ghia only part....however Karmann Ghia used parts made for Bugs, Busses, Type 3's, and Type 4's and even a Type 171. Those parts will have a different letter than "K".
